We learn about the origins of the heroine’s powers, and Mencheres makes an appearance, although the shock factor in relation to his character was a bit of a joke because I didn’t believe for one second that that thing that happened actually did, there’s just no way. I still got a fair amount of enjoyment out of this novel including some good laughs. Per an FAQ on the author’s website, there’s a spin-off in the works for the former, and I get the need to propagate that message, but this could have been done in a more tasteful manner rather than hijacking Dracula’s happily-ever-after. INTO THE FIRE was all about Ian which made Vlad & Leila the protagonists of this story in name only. What should have been a fiery finish to Jeaniene Frost’s NIGHT PRINCE series was a bit of a dud. ![]() 6/28/2023 0 Comments Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan![]() ![]() The voices from the past give contextual relevance to the events taking place in the present, and you can feel the collective sorrow, joy and hope in their words. ![]() I remember the early days of the AIDS pandemic so that colored my reading experience and made it hit home all the more. ![]() The ghost narrators see the familiar and unfamiliar in the world of today’s gay teens, from bullying and unaccepting parents, to gay proms and the rally of support of two boys kissing. Cooper’s story probably got to me the most, and like the narrators of the book I wanted to reach out and help him through his crisis. Each person has their ups and downs over the course of the book, and there are examples of good and bad parenting and coming out experiences. We follow several teen boys throughout the book: The two boys kissing are exes Harry and Craig, Neil and Peter are in a long-term relationship, transgendered Avery meets Ryan, and Cooper is getting lost in the digital dating world. The backdrop of the two boys kissing for the Guinness Book of World Records is the link that binds the characters together. A series of character vignettes intersect to show the contrast between then and now- how things have changed and how they have remained the same. It’s narrated by the spirits of gay men who died of AIDS and watch and wonder over the current generation of gay males. Two Boys Kissing is a powerful book with a unique voice. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The best essay in here was "Muchona the Hornet," a portrait of the anthropologist's favorite informant, previously published in In the Company of Man. The point is: it is not, or not primarily, a failure of intelligence, it’s that you can know an awful lot about something without understanding the first thing about it. Turner parenthetically wonders, ‘(What kind of structure, one is prompted to ask, is this: forced abstract or reinforced concrete?)’, but the question ought to be, ‘What has any of this to do with witchcraft ?’ The explanation-if that is what it is-in terms of social structure does absolutely nothing to explain why it is precisely witch beliefs that are supposed to help in this way.Īnd this is what anthropological and psychological ‘explanations’ generally look like: lacking any direct grasp of the phenomenon in view, or even willingness to attempt any such thing given what they take to be its patent irrationality or (if they are condescending enough) pseudo-rationality, they simply substitute another on which they feel they have a theoretical handle and then publish themselves into a career in defence of this transparent bait-and-switch. ![]() ![]() Turner (1967) reports Marwick (1952) via Douglas (1963): ‘When Cewa social relations become intolerably strained, witch beliefs help to “dissolve relations that have become redundant” they “blast down the dilapidated parts of the social structure, and clear the rubble in preparation for new ones.”’ ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments Lawrence lessig books![]() ![]() ![]() He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society, and the author of 10 books, including Republic, Lost.
